You should not let your low free space continue or you will corrupt the drive. There are no such categories actually on the drive. The categories found in the Storage section of About This Mac is simply an arbitrary way of displaying files on your drive. If you have more than one disk/partition then repeat for each one on your Desktop. You will find the disk information displayed for Capacity, Available, and Used. Press Command-I to open the Get Info window and look at the topmost panel displayed. To find out the correct information for any disk: Select a Desktop disk icon.

Ignore the Storage information as it is typically wrong.

When I travel, the first backup after I disconnect the external produces an error message to remind me to turn off TME while I'm traveling. Now I don't have to remember to do the backups, but I'm also not being bothered with backups every hour, which is the TM default. The advantage of these two is that you set TM OFF, and the app launches it on the schedule, executes the backup and then turns it back off again when done. TimeMachine Scheduler is another product that does the same thing. I use TimeMachineEditor to schedule backups just twice daily at noon and midnight. The challenge with leaving it off is to remember to do the backups manually. Now you can either turn TM back on or leave it off. Now reboot and see if the files have been cleaned up. Try this to get rid of the Mobilebackups files: Go to System Preferences and turn TM off.
